Treat the public URL as an owned asset

A branded link carries a hostname and path that an audience can recognize. The benefit persists only while the organization controls the registration, DNS, provider account and routing rule. Keep a record of every printed or paid placement where that address appears.

Before choosing a slug, think about its lifespan. A descriptive path such as /spring-2026 may be suitable for a seasonal offer. A durable /manual path should not be casually repurposed to unrelated material.

Plan domain DNS

Change the target deliberately

Separating URL identity from the landing page helps with corrections and redesigns. It also creates responsibility: a trusted link redirected to surprising content can damage confidence. Record who approved the new target, why it changed, and how the original URL was retested.
