Choose a hostname for branded links that you can keep
Choose the hostname by the lifespan and ownership of the links, not just by character count. A campaign URL printed on a package can outlive the page and the employee who launched it.
General educationThree ownership patterns
A subdomain such as go.example.com keeps the main site at example.com and can be delegated to a link application. A dedicated short domain can make printed addresses compact but creates another registration to renew and protect. Using the apex itself may be convenient for a single-purpose domain, but it can conflict with an existing website or other services. Decide who owns DNS changes and whether the application can serve the chosen host before distributing links.
| Option | Good fit | Operational cost |
|---|---|---|
| go.example.com | Existing brand with a main website | Maintain subdomain and certificate |
| exm.pl | Short print or social URLs | Renew and govern another registration |
| example.com | Dedicated domain used mainly for links | Coordinate with apex website and email configuration |
The continuity checklist
Record the registrar account, renewal method, nameservers, service owner, certificate state and a recovery contact. Keep the organization, rather than an individual contractor, in control. For high-value printed placements, inventory where every public path appears and designate a replacement plan if the service changes.
Do not assume a www version is automatically active because the apex resolves. Hostname validation and TLS often occur per host. The expected routing response also depends on the service binding, beyond the DNS answer.
Naming paths for future maintainers
Use paths that identify a stable purpose. /manual can point to the latest manual but should still honor what the packaging promised. /spring-2026 tells operators when a campaign started and may deserve an archived end state rather than a new, unrelated promotion. Reserve sensitive or misleading slugs, and avoid publishing an address you will soon want to reclaim for something else.
Stable: go.example.com/manual → current manual
Dated: go.example.com/spring-2026 → campaign archive after closeTest before distribution
Connect the precise hostname, verify ownership, wait for its HTTPS certificate and route binding, then request a known and unknown path. Test from ordinary browsers on mobile as well as a network trace. If DNS resolves but TLS or routing is not ready, postpone the print run; the short domain has not yet become a dependable public address.
