A campaign URL launch checklist that catches tracking mistakes

A campaign URL is ready when its public address, current target, tags and final page tell the same story. Test the full route before paying for traffic or printing material.

Before building links

Name the initiative, owner, launch date and intended landing page. Agree on a source/medium dictionary and decide whether the placement needs a distinct utm_content. Check whether the advertising platform already auto-tags visits. If a campaign has several creatives or channels, use separate public links where you need independent control and a clear inventory of where they appear.

  • Write the campaign ID and naming convention once.
  • Confirm the destination is published and usable on mobile.
  • Choose a public link slug whose meaning will remain understandable.

Build one complete test URL

Start from the landing page's real URL, preserve necessary existing parameters, set each intended UTM key once and encode values. For example, https://example.com/offer?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=fall_2026&utm_content=hero_button. Put that target behind the public managed URL if the placement needs a durable address. Then trace from the public link and inspect the final browser URL.

Placement → https://go.example.com/fall
Redirect → https://example.com/offer?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=fall_2026&utm_content=hero_button

A test has four independent pass conditions

The public host responds with valid HTTPS. The redirect lands at the intended page without a loop or unnecessary hop. The query values survive to the destination. The destination analytics property records a test visit in the expected reporting context, subject to consent and reporting delay. A URL that looks correctly tagged is not proof that the reporting configuration works.

During and after launch

Keep a ledger of placement, public URL, target, tag values, owner and review date. When a landing page changes, record the previous target and retest from the published link. Do not treat a redirect request count as a conversion count. If the promotion ends, choose a useful archive or clear end state instead of silently redirecting old advertisements to an unrelated offer.
